Spring is coming… or so I hope, climate is been oddly weird, some days cold, some warm, and then others you wonder if it’s still February as you freeze while standing outside wondering where you are going to eat.

Anyway. I have something to show you ^_^

A while back, like two or three weeks ago,someone asked me for a notebook with the word “minded” on it, after looking over the ones in my blog. Of course I was happy to do one, since I love to do notebooks ^_^. So here is the result.

For this one, after playing around with the word on paper and pencil, I decided to go abstract and with a black background. The word Minded is surrounded by curls that emanate from the letters themselves and spread out and intertwine. There are also bubbles among the curls and outside.

For this notebook I used mixed media, starting first with white color pencil to do the base outlines, then I used silver and gold color pencils to give detail to the curls and make the bubbles. Finally, to give the image depth, I used white watercolor paint without diluting it and silver pen, alternating which curls went above and which below. I also half outlined the bubbles in white and in silver. Finally, I made a few bubbles in gold for detail, though these are smaller.

The good part of using several media is that it not only gives it depth from one angle, but it also gives it motion, since depending on the angle it is held with respect to light, it will show different details, such as the shading of the bubbles or the intertwining of the curls.

Finally, here is a small sketch I did today.

I really like how the detail in her hair came out, as well as her hair.This was done first in pencil and then using a 0.05 pen (like one of those used for giving the finishing touches on architectual drawings.) Didn’t color it though, that would have take a lot of time.
